Before "overlanding" was officially a "thing", I set out to tour Iceland for 6 weeks. Around the Ring Road, West Fjords, Snæfellsness & Reykjanes peninsulas. Traveling on many roads a Toyota station wagon had no business being on. One afternoon I got stuck in sand, in the middle of nowhere. As luck would have it, I got stuck in the exact spot someone had lost an offroad sand-track. This saved the day, and made me think, "Others have been here, and they were prepared to get stuck. So they didn't die out here like I might today!" This is when I caught the relentless overlanding bug. A persistent beast which eats your money and buys outdoor gear, and gadgets no one else knows or remotely cares about, and sucks most of your time into research on how to be better prepared for the outdoors.
